What is it?
Trafficking for sexual exploitation occurs when a person is coerced or deceived into working in conditions of sexual servitude, slavery or debt bondage. In Australia, trafficking for exploitation in the sex industry is a crime.
How many people are trafficked to Australia for sexual exploitation?
So far, most of the known cases of trafficking to Australia have involved the trafficking of women for sexual exploitation. Between 2003 and October 2011, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has investigated or assessed 305 cases of human trafficking in Australia. Approximately 70% were trafficked into the sex industry.
However, these statistics do not provide a complete picture of trafficking in Australia.
